ALUMINIUM WINDOW REPAIRS
Tilt & Turn Window Gearing Replacement — Meriden Hospital, Coventry
The Brief / Challenge
The tilt-before-turn gearing on aluminium windows at Meriden Hospital in Coventry had failed, preventing the windows from operating correctly. In a healthcare environment, properly functioning windows are critical — they provide controlled ventilation for patient wellbeing, and the restricted opening mechanisms are a mandatory safety feature in mental health and secure healthcare settings.
The defective gearing meant windows were either stuck closed (compromising ventilation) or unable to lock securely in the tilt position, creating both a clinical environment issue and a compliance concern.
The Solution / What We Delivered
Each affected window was deglazed to gain access to the sash and internal hardware. The sashes were removed from the frames, and the defective tilt-before-turn gearing was fully stripped out.
New gearing mechanisms and restricted handles were supplied and installed, restoring the correct tilt-before-turn operation and ensuring the windows could be opened for ventilation while maintaining the restricted opening limits required in a hospital environment.
All sashes were reinstated into the frames and fully realigned to ensure smooth, reliable operation across the full range of movement. The windows were then reglazed, with each IGU correctly toe and heeled — positioning the glass on setting blocks at precise points to achieve the correct load distribution across the sealed unit and prevent premature seal failure or glass stress.
