Overhead glazing at Resorts World Birmingham with replacement 13.52mm toughened HST laminated glass panel with screen-printed frit pattern

The Brief / Challenge

A failed overhead glazing panel at Resorts World Birmingham required replacement. Overhead glazing in a public venue carries specific safety and compliance requirements — Building Regulations mandate laminated glass in overhead positions to ensure that if a panel fractures, the glass fragments remain held in place by the interlayer rather than falling onto occupants below.

The replacement panel needed to match the existing specification precisely: 13.52mm clear toughened HST (Heat Soak Tested) laminated glass with a screen-printed frit pattern. The HST process is critical for overhead applications — it subjects the toughened glass to a controlled heat cycle that identifies panels containing nickel sulphide inclusions (a naturally occurring impurity that can cause spontaneous breakage months or years after installation), eliminating them before they're installed in the building.

The Solution / What We Delivered

All Health & Safety documentation was prepared in advance of the works, including a full Lift Plan, RAMS, and permits to work tailored to the venue's operational and safety requirements.

The replacement 13.52mm clear toughened HST laminated glass with screen-printed frit pattern was manufactured to specification, with secure transport and controlled handling coordinated from factory to site. The frit pattern — a ceramic ink screen-printed onto the glass surface and fused during the toughening process — was matched to the existing panels to maintain visual consistency across the overhead glazing.

Access equipment and a CPA Contract Lift were provided to facilitate the installation. The failed panel was carefully removed from the overhead system and correctly disposed of. The new laminated glass panel was lifted into position, aligned within the glazing system, and securely fixed.
