CURTAIN WALL ADAPTIONS
Installation of Toggle-Glazed IGUs to Curtain Walling — Acer Tower, Manchester
The Brief / Challenge
Two former door openings within the curtain walling system at Acer Tower in Manchester were no longer required and needed to be permanently infilled to create fixed glazed sections that matched the appearance and performance of the surrounding façade. The existing temporary boarding in the openings needed to be removed and replaced with properly specified, structurally integrated glazing.
Additionally, a separate opening required the supply and installation of a new thermal commercial door to upgrade the building entrance.
The Solution / What We Delivered
The temporary boarding was removed from both former door openings and the apertures were prepared for glazing. Two specialist double-glazed units were manufactured and installed, incorporating laminated toughened glass with painted borders and toggle-channelled spacer bars — the painted borders providing a visual frame that matched the appearance of the adjacent curtain wall panels.
The glazing was secured using structural glazing toggles — a mechanical fixing system that clamps the glass into the curtain wall framework without external pressure plates, maintaining the clean, flush appearance of a structurally glazed façade. The installation included powder-coated transom sections to form the new framing within the openings, EPDM gaskets for weathering, SSG4000 black mastic for structural bonding, and aluminium pressings with EPDM base detailing to complete the weathering and drainage at the base of each new glazed section.
All components were specified and installed to integrate seamlessly with the existing curtain wall system, ensuring the infilled sections matched the surrounding façade in both appearance and performance.
The supply and installation of a new thermal commercial door to the separate opening was completed by Door Engineers, a division of Alu-Glaze & Door Engineers Ltd.
